5G Technology for Safety-of-Life Applications in the Railway Sector
GRAIL (NAVISP-EL1-109) is a project promoted by the European Space Agency (ESA) within the NAVISP Element 1 programme. The project studies the use of 5G algorithms for positioning in the railway sector, with the aim of contributing to the development of innovative solutions supporting Safety-of-Life applications.

GRAIL, acronym for 5G Localisation for Safety-of-Life Applications in Rail, is dedicated to the development of innovative solutions in the field of Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT).
The objective of the project is to design, develop and demonstrate a Proof of Concept (PoC) for the use of FRMCS/5G NR (FR1) signals in Safety-of-Life (SoL) railway localisation applications, within the context of the evolution of ERTMS and the ASTP element.
The Proof of Concept will aim to assess one or more system configurations against the performance requirements defined in the ITT, with particular reference to accuracy, integrity and availability. These metrics will be aligned with the Tolerable Hazard Rates (THR) required for safety-critical railway applications and with the safety standards typically adopted in the sector, including reference to SIL4 levels.
From a technical perspective, the project includes the definition of an architecture for the integration of 5G FRMCS signals, the development and verification of measurement error models, the identification and mitigation of critical events related to 5G, as well as the strengthening of resilience against GNSS vulnerabilities, such as jamming and spoofing, through integrity barriers and dedicated algorithms.
The final objective of GRAIL is to contribute to the development of accurate, reliable and resilient railway localisation solutions capable of supporting Safety-of-Life applications and future evolutions of ERTMS systems.
